Necropoli Alghelu Ruju - Alghero

Necropolis of Anghelu Ruju
The discovery of the Necropolis Anghelu Ruju dates back to 1903. In 1904 10 hypogea were dug out and 21 "domus de janas", whose finds are preserved in the National Archaeological Museum in Cagliari, were discovered in 1907.
The "domus de janas"'s halls and inner rooms show relief and painting decorations: you can see stylized taurine protoma on the pillars' upper side whereas halls and inner rooms are painted red.

The tombs could contain one person (single tomb) or up to thirty persons (group tombs). Burying was very common: skeletons lying flat on their backs - they are about 1,62 mt tall - have been found inside several tombs.

If you want to get to the Necropolis, leave Alghero from Rione Sant' Agostino (St Agostine quarter) towards Sassari: the Necropolis is 5,9 Km far from Alghero. You will find it on the left.
